Saint Seraphim Rose on the Old Calendarists: from 1962 to 1982
Since the repose of Saint Seraphim Rose in Platina, California, in 1982, his influential writings and letters have gained increasing prominence among Orthodox Christians in North America, transcending jurisdictional boundaries. Saint Seraphim, a hieromonk within the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, was renowned for his unwavering adherence to Orthodox tradition, his ascetic labors, and his sober-minded zeal for Holy Orthodoxy. Like the Holy Synod to which he was obedient, Saint Seraphim was a strong supporter of, and in eucharistic communion with, the True Orthodox Christians of Greece, commonly referred to as the Old Calendarists.
His private correspondence, spanning the years 1962 to 1982, reveals that Saint Seraphim was a consistent advocate for the so-called moderate Old Calendarists, despite the many challenges they faced during his lifetime. He recognized these True Orthodox Christians, as did his Holy Synod, as canonical Orthodox believers striving against the pan-heresy of Ecumenism and resisting the corrosive effects of modernism in the same manner as the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and the Russian Catacomb Church.
Regrettably, in contemporary times, some within World Orthodoxy have sought to obfuscate and retroactively alter Saint Seraphim’s thoughts, teachings, and personal opinions regarding the Old Calendarist Orthodox Christians. This volume presents a detailed chronological and historical analysis of Saint Seraphim’s letters, demonstrating that, from the inception of his monastic life in Platina to his blessed repose in 1982, he consistently recognized the Old Calendarist synods as canonical Orthodox Christians, even while not necessarily agreeing with every position held by every synod.
